Howard and Novalyne Price and was disappointed that it wasn't filmed around Cross Plains or Brownwood. I could tell right away that the setting was too green and lush for that part of Texas. I found out that it was filmed around Austin which has more rain and different soils.dukehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06635418934162109442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7281203981310562736.post-82798239389095175502022-01-05T03:41:14.501-06:002022-01-05T03:41:14.501-06:00Fascinating article, Bookmakring this to read Wrig...Fascinating article, Bookmakring this to read Wright's favorite stories. When I finished the story, it didn't hit me at first, but I re-read the last paragraphs and left with my mouth hanging. I am still going through the Del Rey collection, but this story is definitely a highlight.

However I prefer Horror from the Mound as a weird western compared to MotG, even though the latter is a better written piece.Buntybarbarianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01834029545792182155noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7281203981310562736.post-8031033261433433462021-01-27T19:12:00.029-06:002021-01-27T19:12:00.029-06:00Howard's father wrote a letter to E. Reading Price's book is a thing REH fans need to do. But there is no one book that has "everything," depending on what you mean by "everything!" Some of the material only exists as fragments and drafts, like the "Isle of the Eons" material, and a lot of Howard's material is interconnected and Lovecraftian - but not usually in ways that involve the Mythos. For example, in "The Scarlet Citadel" we read:

As for Tsotha — men say that a dancing-girl of Shadizar slept too near the pre-human ruins on Dagoth Hill and woke in the grip of a black demon; from that unholy union was spawned an accursed hybrid men call Tsotha-lanti—

Which sounds a lot like the origin of Wilbur Whateley on Sentinel Hill, doesn't it? And maybe too Frank Belknap Long's poem ""The Horror on Dagoth Wold." But is it a Mythos reference, a nod-and-a-wink, or just a coincidence?

Later authors tend to borrow-in some of Howard's other stories to make them more firmly a part of the Mythos. Robert M. Price wrote "Dope War of the Black Tong" to bring in Howard's weird detective Steve Harrison; other writers have assumed "Gods of Bal-Sagoth" is a Mythos story, even though it was written before Howard and Lovecraft began to communicate. Clark Ashton Smith wrote about serpent people in "The Seven Geases" and "The Double Shadow" - but are these the same as in Howard's "The Shadow Kingdom"? Reply hazy, try again.

Lovecraft certainly liked some of Howard's material - I wrote about the origin of Secret History of Nameless Cults a few months back - and incorporated references to Valusia, Bran Mak Morn, etc. into some of his later fiction like "The Whisperer in Darkness."

So depending on your standpoint, a lot of stuff that doesn't mention the Mythos explicitly could still be said to be part of the extended Mythos, through shared characters and settings. But nobody as far as I know has ever tried to do a tome that collects all of that! Some of it would obviously be very tangential. I like how NAMELESS CULTS works in some of the Bran Mak Morn stories on the theme of the theme of the Little People mythos, and that kind of annotation and commentary is really what I as a fan want - but to each their own.greyirishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08613850313903205301noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7281203981310562736.post-90712243435973158292020-10-05T00:50:12.630-05:002020-10-05T00:50:12.630-05:00Hello Sir, I have a question. If you are familiar at all with the U.S. South, as well as Texas, at the turn of the 20th century and well into the mid-20th century, Malachi was a fairly popular name (perhaps even more so with North East Christian sects, e.g. Quakers and Amish). I'd love to find out how he came up with Malachi Grim.

While I'm not totally sold on the idea that REH developed the name from people in the Bible (though Malachi is the name of a minor OT prophet), I have not completely eliminated that as a possibility. But this information really does cast a looming shadow on that idea, in my humble opinion. Thanks for the interesting feedback. Cheers!Todd B.
